We hope you enjoyed our DIY series on simple plumbing repairs you can do around the house. After much discussion, we have decided to follow up this blockbuster hit with plumbing smells in your home.
The Laundry Room
What is that dank smell coming from your laundry room. There is a chance that it is the smell of weeks of unwashed clothing, but more likely it is because you have a high efficiency washing machine. High efficiency washers are great at using less water and creating not so pleasant odours. Fortunately, the scents that come from them are easily solved. The first thing to try is are cleaning tablets that can be purchased at most stores that clean the nooks and crannies of the washer. The second is the filter usually located at the bottom of the washer, this hard to see part should be cleaned every 2 months. The filter usually gets clogged with hair, fibers, and other debris that stay damp and can cause a nasty smell to come out of your machine. You can find instructions on how to clean the filter in your user’s manual, or on the manufacturers website.
The Furnace Room
The musty odour coming from your furnace room floor drain: This is another easy DIY fix. The water that sits inside your floor drain can become stagnant over time, sometimes even evaporating which allows sewer smells and other odours to come up from the drain. Pouring fresh water, bleach, or vinegar into the floor drain can easily eliminate this smell.
The Kitchen Sink
There are many reasons your kitchen sink may begin to smell. If you have a garburator you may have a smell from rotting food. Try running it with lemon peels or oil to help remove this smell from the garburator. The second reason kitchen sink drains become less than fresh is due to your dishwasher. If the dishwashers trap has not been cleaned for a while it will get a little ripe causing a smell in your kitchen sink. Instructions for cleaning the trap of your dishwasher can be found in your users-manual or on the manufacturers website.
